Even in the virtual reality (VR) space, “it’s NERF or nothin.'”
Following months of teasing, NERF Ultimate Championship has launched on Meta Quest 2. The VR title was developed in-house at Secret Location, a VR studio run by Hasbro’s Entertainment One (eOne) division. NERF Ultimate Championship invites players to form a squad and master the mechanics of authentic NERF blasters that also exist in the real world. The multiplayer combat title drops players into colorful battle arenas in which they face off with digital versions of foam darts.
“From the start, we set out to translate the thrilling competition of NERF battles into VR, while keeping that authentic NERF feel that makes it fun for everyone,” says Michael Sandercock, lead game designer at Secret Location. “We paid special attention to our blaster mechanics and movement system to match the high physicality that characterizes a NERF battle, and we added a few enhancements that make the game even more exciting, such as wall-running; and the most epic collection of NERF blasters you could ever imagine.”
At launch, the $14.99 game includes 10 NERF Blasters with more on the way. The game also comes with free season passes and unlocks, including exclusive blaster skins.
Hasbro says that it has a “content roadmap” for the game that should, ideally, drive player interest from the virtual realm into the blaster aisles of their local retailers.
