From the Editor: California Dreamin’

Over the past decade, a movement has reshaped the U.S. toy industry. Rumbling throughout the greater Los Angeles area, a new fault line created a distinct break between what is and what once was. On one side, the traditions of the past loom large, with New York City standing tall as the spiritual home of the business despite most companies having moved out of the city years ago. Meanwhile, as the ghosts of Toy Fair Dallas fade following a “last rodeo” of sorts in 2022, a vibrant new tradition is born in the heart of Southern California as the LA Fall Toy Preview commands an international spotlight.

GOOD VIBRATIONS

This issue of The Toy Book is inspired by the sunny SoCal vibes that many will enjoy this month as we gather for an early look at the toys and games that kids and families will be playing with in the year ahead. Continuing the fall preview tradition, this issue features hundreds of new products, but with a twist! Our categories have been refreshed and renamed to better represent the modern toy department. The Action Aisle, The Learning Lab, and Let’s Play Outside! are just a few examples of what you’ll discover behind our “New for 2025” and expanded “Hot for Holiday” showcases.

THE NEW TOY DISTRICT

While it’s no Toy Fair, The Toy Association formally enters the fray this year with its first-ever LA Fall Preview space, comprising three floors of an unassuming office building adjacent to LAX. That space joins a growing number of similar venues in welcoming members of the global play community to the neighborhood surrounding Mattel HQ in El Segundo. This organic migration now includes nearly 300 companies with temporary and permanent spaces. To help navigate this new “Toy District” (not to be confused with the old Toy District in downtown LA), The Toy Book has assembled a print directory (p. 36) with details on where to find nearly every exhibiting company. Be on the lookout for enhanced listings from manufacturers eager to do new business with retail buyers of every size.

HOLLYWOOD SWINGING

When I think about LA, many things come to mind. As a kid, I imagined myself as Michael Knight, cruising across the El Mirage Dry Lake Bed in the Knight Industries 2000 — KITT, for short — an iconic image from the title sequence of NBC’s Knight Rider. Of course, I played that out with my Kenner Knight 2000 Voice Car. Who could’ve predicted that more than 40 years later, not only would Playmobil offer a KITT toy, but the original, AI-powered smart car would also inspire a collaboration that’s truly “more than meets the eye.” Check out page 78 to catch up with Hasbro’s Transformers as the brand’s 40th anniversary celebration culminates with the theatrical release of Transformers One.

Speaking of Autobots, Optimus Prime shares the spotlight alongside a Minecraft Creeper, Sonic the Hedgehog, Freddy Fazbear, Mr. Monopoly, The Elf on the Shelf, Polly Pocket, and El Segundo’s most famous resident and recent box office superstar, Barbie, on our editorial cover. Artist Kenny Kiernan returns for a hand-illustrated tribute to the storied history between Hollywood and its toy and game industry partners. Behind the cover, you’ll find all the exclusive insights and features you expect and count on from The Toy Book.

THE PULSE OF PLAY

Finally, I’m excited to invite all of you to submit your nominations for The Toy Book’s inaugural Pulse of Play Awards! This new honor (p. 46) celebrates the individuals, companies, and activations at the heart of our industry. Backed by the power of the industry’s leading media organization, there’s nothing else like it!

It’s ‘Back to Business at Basic Fun!’ According to Jay Foreman

As the LA Fall Toy Previews kick into high gear this week, there is good news to report from Basic Fun!

Last night, Basic Fun! CEO Jay Foreman got in touch to share an update on the company’s reorganization, which made headlines earlier this summer as the prepackaged effort was filed in bankruptcy court with a firm intention to “emerge quickly” from the process. Read the latest from Foreman below.

“I’m very pleased to report Basic Fun’s imminent emergence from our restructuring process. We’ve entered into a complete settlement with our private equity partner. We expect swift and final approval from the court in Delaware within 30 to 45 days. We have the full support of all our partners and lenders and a dynamic new capital plan that will enable us to continue to grow and look for new acquisition opportunities.

I’d like to stress that not one supplier, retailer, licensors or employee was negatively affected by the restructuring and it’s been business as usual along the way. That’s very different than say what happened in the case of Toys ‘R’ Us who went from a Chapter 11 [reorganization] process to a Chapter 7 liquidation, or companies like Delta Airlines and General Motors who emerged from Chapter 11 processes but left many employees and vendors suffering loses. It’s certainly no fun to go through this type of process as it’s stressful on all involved but sometimes you have to take a step back to take a step forward.

In fact, we’re taking several steps forward. We expect this year to be a record-setting sales year for the company, led by new introductions and our carry-forward brands. I remain the majority owner of the business and operating CEO, and our entire management team remains firmly in place. At Basic Fun!, we’ve got our heads down and are pushing forward to build value for our stakeholders and partners.

— Jay”

Other sources have echoed Foreman’s statements privately to The Toy Book in recent weeks, noting a rare circumstance where an unpleasant situation was handled with honor and care.

As the finish line for Basic Fun!’s reorganization approaches, the company is set up in the growing “El Segundo Toy District” for the ongoing LA Fall Toy Previews. For more of Foreman’s thoughts on this year’s preview season, check out his latest blog at Global Toy News.

LA Fall Toy Previews: Little Rebels, Beverly Hills Teddy Bear Co. Strike Licensing Deal

On the eve of Marketing Week during the LA Fall Toy Previews, Little Rebels revealed a new licensing partnership with Beverly Hills Teddy Bear Co. (BHTB) facilitated by Cuesta Licensing.

Under the new deal, BHTB, maker of the “World’s Softest Plush” line, becomes the master plush licensee for the growing Little Rebels brand. Marjorie Spitalnik founded Little Rebels to provide a “playful and educational experience, empowering young minds to explore the incredible legacies of trailblazing women,” including Amelia Earhart, Marie Curie, Mary Jackson, and Malala Yousafzai.

After noticing that my daughter’s school textbooks lacked stories of women’s achievements, I took it upon myself to change that. I found books, but nothing interactive or playful. We learn better through play, so I decided to create a toy that could teach history in a fun way. That’s how Little Rebels was born in 2019.”
— Marjorie Spitalnik, CEO of Little Rebels

In the past five years, Little Rebels has become an award-winning brand with a companion app and a retail network that includes retailers and museums across the U.S. The new deal with BHTB opens new avenues for building the brand and extending its retail footprint.

“I'm grateful to be a part of an innovative and modern technology in plush to educate our 'Little Rebels' about the legendary Rebels that forged a path for us all."
— Marlene Cuesta, CEO of Cuesta Licensing

Retail buyers and other parties interested in Little Rebels or other Beverly Hills Teddy Bear products can call 310.6254734 to book a meeting. The BHTB showroom is located at 1960 E. Grand Ave. in El Segundo, California, Suite 350.

Mattel Partners with Carolina Herrera for Unique Barbie Doll

Venezuelan fashion designer Carolina Herrera was honored at the 37th annual Hispanic Heritage Awards at the John F. Kennedy Center yesterday, Sept. 5. To celebrate the honor, Mattel designed a one-of-a-kind Barbie doll in her likeness.

The doll is wearing a custom couture gown Herrera wore to the New York City Ballet’s Annual Fall Gala last October, which was designed by Wes Gordon, Creative Director of Carolina Herrera.

“Carolina Herrera and Barbie are both icons synonymous with strength in femininity,” Gordon says. “I was thrilled to attend the New York City Ballet Fall Gala last year with Mrs. Herrera dressed in one of my designs, and to have this look in signature Herrera Red and Pink immortalized in this way makes it all the more special.”

The doll will be featured in an exclusive editorial on the @BarbieStyle Instagram along with two dolls wearing runway looks from the Carolina Herrera Fall/Winter 2024 collection. Three fans will have the chance to own these dolls by bidding for them in the Bidding For Good Auction with proceeds going towards Solving Kids’ Cancer, an organization that funds breakthrough treatment options to cure children with pediatric cancer. The auction goes live today, Sept. 6, and closes on Tuesday, Sept. 10.

“Barbie has always been a very special doll for all the girls I know,” Herrera says. “Many have been created to represent multiple versions of women through the years, and I hope this one can make a lot of children very happy through our donation to Solving Kid’s Cancer.”

Barbie will also make an appearance at Carolina Herrera’s New York Fashion Week show on Monday, Sept. 9.

Build-A-Bear Kicks Off NFL Season with Kansas City Chiefs Partnership as Kidults Score 40% of Sales

Two Missouri-based companies are teaming up for some gridiron goodness.

Build-A-Bear Workshop inked a multi-year deal with the back-to-back Super Bowl Champion Kansas City Chiefs. The deal expands on Build-A-Bear’s 20-year partnership with the NFL.

Under the new deal, Build-A-Bear becomes the presenting partner of both the “KC Wolf” mascot and the Chiefs digital Fan Cam experience in which game attendees can tag themselves in a high-resolution, full-stadium picture in addition to hunting for a Build-A-Bear hidden somewhere in the stands during each home game at Arrowhead Stadium for a shot at winning a prize.

We believe this multi-dimensional relationship underscores the winning formula that has been created between the two organizations, and adding the Kansas City Chiefs, our corporate 'home team,' to the roster is clearly a touchdown."
— Chris Hurt, Chief Operating Officer, Build-A-Bear

According to Build-A-Bear, the adult collector market, aka “kidults,” now represents up to 40% of its overall business.

The company says it’s leaning into the “broadening consumer demographic” that overlaps between NFL and Build-A-Bear fans.

No word yet on Travis Kelce or Taylor Swift Build-A-Bears, but fans can no doubt pretend and play dress-up with all the options currently available at their local Build-A-Bear Workshop.
