Circana reported year-to-date consumer spending in June 2023, including video game content, hardware, and accessories, totaled $26.6 billion, a 2% increase from last year.

June 2023 total consumer spending reached $4.7 billion, a 9% increase when compared to June 2022. It was the second-highest spending achieved in a June month, after $4.8 billion in June 2021.

While spending on video game content increased by 7% in June when compared to last year, totaling $4.1 billion, content spending during this year’s first half reached $22.8 billion, flat compared to a year ago. An 8% increase in content spending on Console and a slight gain in Non-Mobile Subscription spending were offset by declines in the Mobile and the PC, Cloud, and Non-Console VR segments.

Video game hardware spending increased 22%, versus June last year, to $454 million. This is the highest video game hardware spend for a June month since the $617 million reached in June 2008. Double-digit percentage growth in PlayStation 5 spending offset declines in spending on Xbox Series and Switch. Year-to-date hardware spending remains 23% higher when compared to the same period in 2022, at $2.6 billion. PlayStation 5 was the best-selling hardware platform in both unit and dollar sales during June 2023, and continues to lead the 2023 hardware market across both units and dollars.

Accessories spending during June increased 14% when compared to a year ago, totaling $214 million. The PlayStation 5 DualSense Edge remains the best-selling accessory of 2023 in dollar sales.

In gaming, Diablo IV was the No. 1 best-selling game of June, instantly becoming the No. 3 best-selling game of 2023 year-to-date. Other new releases among the top 10 include Final Fantasy XVI (No. 2) and Street Fighter 6 (No. 3).
