One of Mexico’s most successful artists and toymakers has died.
Last week, Amparo Serrano — known to many fans as Amparín — died following an accident in her home outside of Mexico City. The 56-year-old artist and designer was the creator and founder of Distroller, the international company behind the colorful Neonate Babies, Chamoy & Amiguis, and Virgencita Plis brands.
The Toy Book received a statement issued on behalf of Amparín’s team at Distroller:
“With deep sadness, we are devastated to share that our creator Amparo has passed away due to an accident that happened a few days ago.
We join in grieving with her family, mother, daughters, granddaughters, siblings and friends.
We will always remember her for her impressive capacity, imagination, strength and dedication. Creating this company and giving happiness to millions of people with her creations, always at the forefront of her great brand Distroller.
Rest in peace Amparin, there is no doubt that you are in Distropolis, the world you always imagined, you will continue to enlighten us.
You will always be with us.”
— The Distroller Family
Serrano founded Distroller in 2004 and built a business that quickly expanded across toys, licensing, and entertainment. The Neonate Babies aka Ksi-Meritos became an international hit that led to the opening of a few experiential Distroller World stores in the U.S. While the stores closed on the cusp of the COVID-19 pandemic, Distroller has remained a popular direct-to-consumer toy brand and recently exhibited at Licensing Expo in Las Vegas.
Rest in peace.
