To attract modern hobbyists, companies have to meet them at their scale.
Hornby, a UK toy and hobby product manufacturer, introduced a new scale of model railways for the first time in more than 50 years. Scaled to 1:120 and known as tabletop railways (TT), Hornby TT:120 is smaller than the more traditional “00” models, but the items can still be handled by both young and old.
Designed for space-constrained families, this model railway can be accommodated on a much smaller baseboard, which can easily be stored underneath a bed. There’s no need for the space required of older sets, making the hobby much more appealing for today’s generation where homeownership may come later in life. In TT form, Hornby offers a complete model railway system, including train sets, locomotives, carriages, wagons, a comprehensive track system, and buildings and accessories.
“We have been developing Hornby TT:120 for several years,” says Simon Kohler, marketing and product development director at Hornby, “and it represents a substantial investment. Hornby TT:120 provides many solutions for those who really want to create a model railway but have little or no space for the larger ‘00’ size.”
With the new scale, the company will be selling and distributing via its own dedicated online service. Customers can also join the Hornby TT:120 Club to enjoy certain benefits, one of which is a 15% discount on all purchases. The sets will start to arrive just before Christmas.
