Jakks Pacific is extending its multiyear licensing pact with SEGA of America as production ramps up on Paramount Pictures’ Sonic the Hedgehog 2.

SEGA bestowed global toy rights to Jakks Pacific to design, manufacture, create, market, and sell Sonic the Hedgehog 2-branded toys, including action figures, playsets, vehicles, plush, and collectibles. Additionally, Disguise — the costume division of Jakks Pacific — will be developing a full line of costumes and accessories based on characters from the film.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is sure to be a runaway hit in 2022,” says Craig Drobis, senior vice president of marketing, Jakks Pacific. “Given the success of the first movie and the performance of our current Sonic the Hedgehog product line, we are excited to continue to develop toys that follow along with Sonic’s next great movie adventure.”

Jakks developed a small assortment of products inspired by last year’s Sonic the Hedgehog that performed well as the film did big business at the box office.

“We’ve seen such a great response from fans to the Sonic the Hedgehog products created by Jakks Pacific,” says Alex Gomez, licensing director, SEGA of America. “We hope that fans of the Blue Blur will see the collection as a testament of our appreciation and create memorable Sonic experiences with the products for years to come.”

Jakks Pacific recently inked new deals with Nintendo and Moonbug Entertainment for Disguise costumes inspired by properties including Kirby and Blippi. The Santa Monica-based toymaker is expected to release its Q4 and full-year 2020 earnings tomorrow.

Sonic the Hedgehog first hit video game consoles on June 23, 1991.
