The Red Rocker and the Blue Bomber are headed for the big screen.
Mattel Films is collaborating with Universal Pictures and Vin Diesel’s One Race Films on a live-action film based on the classic tabletop game, Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots.
Diesel (The Fast Saga, Guardians of the Galaxy) plans to star in the film and will produce alongside his sister, Samantha Vincent (The Fast Saga) while Kevin McKeon will lead the product for Mattel. A screenplay from Ryan Engle (Rampage, The Commuter) “follows a father and son who form an unlikely bond with an advanced war machine.”
“To take the classic Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em game, with Mattel as my partner, and align it with the kind of world-building, franchise-making success we have had with Universal is truly exciting,” says Diesel.
Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots — inspired by an arcade boxing game — was originally released by the Marx Toy Co. in the mid-1960s.
Beyond Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots, Mattel Films has 11 additional features in various stages of development, including titles based on American Girl, Barbie, Barney, Hot Wheels, Magic 8 Ball, Major Matt Mason, Masters of the Universe, Thomas & Friends, UNO, View-Master, and Wishbone. Additionally, Mattel Television has nearly 20 shows and specials in production with more than 25 in development, including The UNO Game Show and the recently announced Whac-A-Mole.
