Mattel Introduces Monster High Property, Signs Licensees for Franchise

Mattel has added a new property to its portfolio of brands, Monster High.  The property follows hip teenagers, who are also the descendants of the world’s most famous monsters, as they brave the ups and downs of high school. The characters include Frankie Stein, the daughter of Frankenstein; Draculaura, the daughter of Count Dracula; Clawdeen Wolf, the daughter of The Werewolf; Lagoona Blue, the daughter of The Sea Monster; Cleo de Nile, the daughter of The Mummy; and Deuce Gorgon, the son of Medusa. Websiodes have already premiered at, the property’s website. Mattel has signed an array of licensees to support the brand, including those in the categories of party/costumes, apparel, accessories, footwear, publishing, and toys. Mattel will release toys and accessories based on the brand beginning in July. The collection will include dolls, plush, a fortune skull, a handheld device, a tattoo maker, keychain assortment, and more. Amscan will introduce an exclusive line of Monster High costumes at Party City, for tweens. The costumes, complete with a wig, will be available Halloween 2010. High IntenCity will team up with Mattel for the first time for jewelry and hair accessories inspired by Monster High. Icon Heroes to Produce “Thundercats” Collectible Statues and More

Warner Bros. Consumer Products (WBCP) has partnered with Icon Heroes to create collectible products inspired by the 1980’s animated series, Thundercats.  Under the new deal, Icon Heroes will manufacture a line of six-inch and under-scale statues, vehicle replicas, environments, and dioramas inspired by the television series. The statues will be branded as “Staction Figures” (Static Action Figures), and will be non-articulated, standing on top of a detailed environment base. Each Staction Figure will be scaled so that they can be displayed individually or alongside other six-inch action figures and statues. The first Staction Figures scheduled for release are Lion-O, Jackal Man, and Jaga. Other products––such as Thunderclaw, Cat’s Lair, and more––will be released at a later date. Nintendo to Release 3-D Portable Console

Nintendo has announced that it will release a 3-D portable console, the Nintendo 3DS. The system will use two screens, will be backwards compatible with current DS and DSi games, and—most likely the biggest feature—players won’t have to wear any special glasses to see the game in 3-D. Last month, Ars Technica posted a video (above) of a downloadable game that is currently out in Japan, which allows the user to see a 3-D effect by peering into the game and moving the console back and forth. The 3DS may use similar technology. The Nintendo 3DS is scheduled to be release before the end of the fiscal year, sometime between April 2010 and March 2011.
