The nonprofit organization FIRST has been collaborating with LEGO since 1998 — and their partnership is still going strong 22 years later. LEGO Education and FIRST are unveiling the new 2020-2021 FIRST LEGO League season theme: RePLAY. For the new season, students must complete tasks related to health, sports, and fitness.
The goal of the FIRST LEGO League is to introduce STEM skills to kids ages 4-16 through hands-on learning and a guided, global robotics program. In the new season, FIRST LEGO League will use a simplified program structure with three divisions: Challenge (kids ages 9-14), Explore (kids ages 6-10), and Discover (kids ages 4-6). Team registration for all three age divisions is now open for the season, which launches on August 4.
The educational program will task students with completing a challenge designed using LEGO Education products, including LEGO Education WeDo 2.0, LEGO Mindstorms Education EV3, and the new LEGO Education SPIKE Prime and SPIKE Prime Expansion set.
The impact of the FIRST LEGO League lasts well beyond the season — a New Jersey FIRST LEGO League coach and a network of students, coaches, and community members recently leaned on FIRST core values to 3D print more than 25,000 personal protective equipment (PPE) face shields for frontline workers during the COVID-19 pandemic.
