It’s officially official: Labubu is heading to the big screen.
Confirming a November scoop by The Hollywood Reporter, Pop Mart and Sony Pictures Entertainment are developing a feature film based on Labubu, part of Pop Mart’s The Monsters universe. The project centers on the collectible characters created by artist Kasing Lung and marks a step into long-form storytelling for the brand.
The companies revealed the film during The Monsters’ 10th-anniversary exhibition in Paris. Paul King, known for directing Wonka and the Paddington films, is attached to direct and co-write the screenplay with Steven Levenson (Dear Evan Hansen).
Labubu has built a global following through Pop Mart’s blind box collectibles, with demand spanning Asia, Europe, and North America.
The Labubu movie will extend the brand’s reach across entertainment, licensing, and retail as Pop Mart looks to turn last year’s hottest accessory into an evergreen property that lives beyond TikTok and the toy department.
Perhaps The Toy Book predicted Labubu’s Hollywood aspirations on the cover of last year’s LA Fall Toy Previews issue, released in September.
