Like many modern toy companies, Hasbro has committed in part to focusing on environmental and social policy within its company. The company’s latest environmental, social, and governance (ESG) progress report, Playing with Purpose, details advancement and plans from Hasbro across four areas: planet, play, people, and principles.

Hasbro recently conducted ESG materiality mapping in order to prepare the report. The company requested stakeholder and employee surveys, held a leadership workshop to discuss issues, and utilized an independent consultant to examine changes since its last 2017 ESG report.

“We believe we have a responsibility to leverage the power of our iconic brands to leave the world a better place than we found it,” says Chris Cocks, CEO, Hasbro. “As we fulfill our mission to entertain and connect generations of fans through the wonder of storytelling and the exhilaration of play, we are taking purposeful steps to make progress against key ESG issues relevant to our business and our stakeholders.”

Regarding the planet, Hasbro is attempting to reach the overall goal of sustainability. The company began measuring its greenhouse gas emissions decades ago, and hopes to decrease to net zero emissions by 2050. Additional initiatives that have been explored include a program to recycle Magic the Gathering booster pack wrapping and a line of sustainable toys from Playskool. Hasbro also devoted a section of the report to climate risk and resilience, focusing on how climate change could affect the business and how the company will remain profitable and functioning with these upcoming challenges.

The play section focuses on actual play with Hasbro’s toys, such as quality, safety, and content. The report outlines the company’s safety standards and product development process. It also talks about the Philanthropy and Social Impact program as well as volunteer projects by Hasbro employees.

The individual workers within Hasbro are more integral than anything to company success, and Hasbro’s report has a section dedicated to people within it. This section focuses on the company’s goals such as giving more leadership roles to women and diversifying the workforce. The report also includes data regarding employee turnover and results from employee surveys.

Finally, the principles section of the Play with Purpose report includes information such as Hasbro’s updates to its Ethical Sourcing program as well as a worker well-being program that offers training and support in areas such as healthcare and financial literacy. Factory survey data is also included, indicating critical issues such as working hours and emergency preparedness.
