The LEGO Group is adding more power to its U.S. manufacturing footprint — this time on the sustainability front.

The company revealed plans for a large-scale solar installation at LEGO Manufacturing Virginia, its factory under construction in Chesterfield County. The project is designed to significantly expand on-site renewable capacity as LEGO works toward sourcing 100% renewable energy to meet the facility’s annual energy needs.

Construction on the solar park is expected to begin this summer. The installation will include more than 30,700 ground-mounted panels across nearly 80 acres, generating 22 MWp of capacity. An additional 10,080 rooftop panels will add 6.11 MWp.

“We’re proud of the progress we continue to make,” said Jesus Ibañez, General Manager of LEGO Manufacturing Virginia. “These initiatives are key to increasing our use of renewable energy and support our ongoing commitment towards more sustainable operations.”

The solar expansion is part of a broader buildout at the site, which remains on schedule following its structural milestone last fall. The facility includes mass-timber office construction, designed to reduce carbon emissions while supporting the company’s wider sustainability goals.

Beyond infrastructure, LEGO continues to scale its workforce in the region. More than 500 employees are currently supporting operations across the factory and a temporary packing facility, with plans to grow to approximately 900 by the end of 2026.

The company is also expanding its local footprint through community investment, committing more than $1.3 million in recent grants to organizations in the Greater Richmond area.

Once complete, the site will anchor LEGO’s U.S. manufacturing strategy — pairing advanced production capabilities with a growing emphasis on renewable energy and resource efficiency.
