The Toy Foundation Celebrates International Day of Play

Today is the first International Day of Play, and The Toy Association and The Toy Foundation are celebrating the new holiday with donations, guidance, and more.

The Toy Association is utilizing its philanthropic arm, The Toy Foundation, to oversee the donation of toys and games to more than 75,000 children across the U.S., with a total value of $900,000.

Play is more than just fun and games – it is a fundamental right that every child, no matter their circumstances, should be able to experience. We are thankful to all of our donors who have generously provided toys to make this International Day of Play a memorable one.
Pamela Mastrota, Executive Director of The Toy Foundation

The Toy Foundation’s Toy Bank will send toys to The Father’s Heart Ministries, a New York City charity focused on serving low-income children, teenagers, and families. Other nonprofits supported by the Toy Foundation today include World Vision, Hope for New York, Metro Kidz, local United Way chapters, and MemorialCare Miller Children’s & Women’s Hospital Long Beach.

Industry leaders such as Bluebee Pals, Jazwares, Just Play, Mattel, Playmobil, Radio Flyer, Safari, Spin Master, Thames & Kosmos, and TOMY International are donating 95,725 toys in total.

The Toy Association is proud to unite the toy community in giving the gift of play to our nation's most vulnerable children through The Toy Foundation, and to offer families the tools they need to make play an important part of their children's day, through our Genius of Play initiative.
Greg Ahearn, President & CEO of The Toy Association

The Toy Association will also highlight its Genius of Play website. The site offers parents, guardians, and educators free play ideas based on different stages of development, downloadable activity guides, and articles of advice from experts.

International Day of Play was officially adopted by the U.N. General Assembly this year and spotlights the importance and impact of play on children. A network of industry leaders, initiated by The LEGO Group, joined together to campaign for the day’s recognition.

California Declares June 11 International Day of Play, Honors Mattel

California passed a resolution just yesterday declaring June 11 as International Day of Play (IDOP), marking it as the first West Coast state to embrace the new holiday. In addition to celebrating IDOP, the California State Legislature also officially recognized Mattel for its role as a leader in the world of play.

A global network of industry leaders spearheaded the IDOP movement, including Mattel, The LEGO Group, the International Play Association, Sesame Workshop, and more. This year, the U.N. General Assembly officially adopted the holiday.

“As a parent I know, first-hand, that play is an essential part of a developing child’s life,” says Senator Ben Allen, Vice Chair, Joint Committee on the Arts. “Play provides an engaging way to nurture creativity and imagination, build social skills, and support a child’s emotional and psychological well-being.”

Following the presentation of the Day of Play resolution, Mattel introduced its IDOP play kits to the legislators. Each kit is full of Mattel toys and will be donated to Save the Children.

Mattel has a full schedule of plans for IDOP. The company will have a number of co-branded promotions available at Target from June 9-15. The Mattel Children’s Foundation will also donate 100,000 toys and books to Save the Children programs. Finally, Mattel plans to host play kit builds at a variety of locations.

Mattel is honored to serve as ambassadors in championing International Day of Play in California. Our purpose is to empower generations to explore the wonder of childhood and reach their full potential and we are proud to support this inaugural moment to help provide children with the opportunity to embrace their fundamental right to play and thrive.
Steve Totzke, President and Chief Commercial Officer of Mattel

Beyond Mattel’s IDOP plans, the company will hold its annual Play It Forward Global Volunteer Week later this month. Employees from a number of Mattel offices will give time to local nonprofits. More information about Mattel’s charity efforts can be found on the company’s official webpage.

Future Chicken aims to educate and inspire generations to come through environment-focused experiences and content. The project features a team of different characters, known as the Planet Protectors, that accompany learning resources. Kids can play green-based games on Roblox, watch shorts on YouTube, listen to a podcast, and participate in various activities focused on the sustainability.

The Advisory Board, led by board chairman and Kapor Center Senior Adviser Dr. Michael Levine, will provide expertise to Future Chicken and help kids take steps to save the planet. It is composed of leaders from kid’s media, technology, education, and climate journalism. It includes Amy Friedman, a kid’s media executive; Christopher Cerf, one of the original creatives at the Children’s Television Workshop Sesame Street; Anya Kamenetz, an education and social impact journalist and author; Beth Richman, a specialist in kid’s media education; and Marco Pimentel, a Canadian digital disruptor and entrepreneur.

Future Chicken’s vibrant mission allows serious learning and humor to work together hand in hand,” Dr. Levine says. “The initiative tackles eco-anxiety with fresh thinking and nurtures hopefulness through evidence-based storytelling. It is an empowering, interactive experience for kids that will teach new skills and mobilize them to help craft solutions.”

“The formation of this extremely accomplished group of leaders in their respective fields marks a significant step forward for Future Chicken as we look to inspire children through stories that educate and empower them to engage with and address climate change,” says Catherine Winder, CEO of Wind Sun Sky, and Annabel Slaight, Founding Chair Non-Profit the Ontario Water Center. “The board’s collective expertise and passion for both children’s media and climate issues will be instrumental in expanding awareness, creating partnership opportunities and most importantly amplifying our impact with children.”

Everyone Needs to Play More, Our Future Depends on it

The first International Day of Play is celebrated on June 11, 2024. On this day every year hereafter, the world will celebrate the power of play.

by NIELS B. CHRISTIANSEN, CEO, The LEGO Group and SIDSEL MARIE KRISTENSEN, CEO, The LEGO Foundation

Play is never just play. Play is universal and taps into children’s natural enthusiasm and curiosity to learn. Play teaches children to explore, to wonder, to connect ideas and experiences and help them gain a deeper understanding of the world that surrounds them. When children play, they develop essential life skills such as creativity, confidence, and resilience that help them thrive as they grow up.

Playing takes little more than picking up a stone or a stick. The only real investment is time. Yet, both parents and children indicate that the demand for children’s time away from play is increasing — with play time often being deprioritized.

In a recent survey of 25,500 children and 36,000 parents in 36 countries commissioned by The LEGO Group, 59% of parents indicated they worry that their children do not have enough playtime, do not have enough access to fun activities, and worry that their child does not have enough playtime as a family.

Almost all children said play is important for their well-being. 91% of parents said that play improves their family’s overall wellbeing, and families who play rated their own happiness higher than those who don’t.

Yet, the average parent reported spending twice the amount of time by themselves on their electronic devices than they do playing with their family and 20% of parents surveyed said they never spend time playing as a family, mirroring 73% of children who think parents do not take play seriously.

These figures are worrisome because play is important for both the development and the well-being of children.

According to Centre on the Developing Child at Harvard University, the first five years in a child’s life are extremely important. Much of the learning that goes on comes from play. And throughout childhood, play is a way for children to develop key life skills like creativity, confidence, and resilience that help them thrive.

We also know that play improves well-being. Both in moments of happiness and when facing challenges, children can find their way back to health and happiness, through play. Because of our jobs, we both frequently interact with children and parents when they play. The focus, joy, and creativity unleashed never cease to amaze.

On a societal scale, economies are set to lose out on big social and economic benefits if early childhood development and play is not prioritized. A recent report by The Royal Foundation Business Taskforce for Early Childhood estimated that investing in early childhood in the UK could add up to £45.5 billion to the national economy each year.

Simply put, playing is natural, healthy, and part of being human — but it is also fundamental to personal and societal progress.

This has long been recognized by the international community. Indeed, the UN Convention of the Rights of the Child, which almost all countries in the world have signed, recognizes the right to play. And earlier this year, in a nod to the importance of this universally human activity, the UN General Assembly adopted an International Day of Play.

Today, and on June 11 every year hereafter, we will celebrate the power of play.

It’s a day to take stock, reflect, and act. That is why today, we ask governments, organizations, schools, and parents to:

  • Prioritize the space and time children need to play.
  • Improve resources and policies for educators, parents, and caregivers to facilitate quality play.
  • Increase access to quality play for children facing additional barriers such as special educational need and disabilities, poverty, or conflict.

We ask you to join us in championing the cultural change needed and put play back on the agenda for kids everywhere. Our future depends on it.

Fisher-Price Adds ‘Schitt’s Creek’ to Little People Collector Line

Schitt’s Creek, created by Eugene and Daniel Levy, is a Canadian sitcom that first aired on CBC Television in 2015.
