Mattel is offering gearheads a first look at the future of the DeLorean Motor Co.
The DeLorean Alpha5 is an all-new electric vehicle (EV) that will be officially showcased for the first time on the awards ramp at the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance during the 2022 edition of Monterey Car Week. Ahead of the grand reveal, Mattel debuted a 1:64-scale Hot Wheels version of the EV.
“Like Hot Wheels, the DeLorean name instantly engages the imaginations of car and pop culture fans,” says Roberto Stanichi, senior vice president of Hot Wheels and global head of vehicles at Mattel. “We are proud to be a part of this next chapter of the DeLorean Motor Company, with a partnership that we believe will only expand.”
Up to this point, fans had only been shown digital renderings of the Alpha5. This Hot Wheels version offers them a chance to observe the new DeLorean in three dimensions for the first time. The Hot Wheels design team worked with DeLorean for four months to develop the die-cast. It required a host of processes to complete, including concept art sketching, digital rendering development, digital clay, 3D printing, and engineering prototype models.
“The Hot Wheels design team worked closely with DeLorean to recreate the Alpha5 as a die-cast car, carefully depicting its proportions to showcase its true lines as a Hot Wheels, while maintaining the design language that was perfectly executed by Italdesign,” says Ted Wu, global head of design for vehicles at Mattel.
The DeLorean Alpha5 1:64-scale die-cast will be released alongside the life-sized car at the event. It will become available for preorder on the Mattel Creations website starting Aug. 18 at 10:30 a.m. PST.
