Sesame Workshop is giving viewers a glimpse into the lives of American families — for the second time.
Through Our Eyes, a docuseries focused on the lives of American families from the perspective of children as they navigate challenges along with parents and siblings, is coming back for a second season courtesy of Sesame Workshop, the producers behind Sesame Street. The news comes after the HBO Max Original series recently won an Emmy for Outstanding Short Documentary.
Season 2 starts production this month, with an anticipated debut in fall 2023. While the first season comprised four episodes, the second season will consist of two episodes focusing on 8-11-year-olds learning about their own race, ethnicity, and culture; facing and fighting racism; and taking positive steps to mitigate negative effects on mental health. Sesame Workshop will once again partner with Multitude Films, including Geeta Gandbhir (who directed Season 1 episode “Apart”), and award-winning independent filmmaker Grace Lee.
“Our goal for Through Our Eyes is to uplift previously unheard voices,” says Kay Wilson Stallings, Sesame Workshop’s executive vice president of creative and production. “We hope to show kids building cultural pride, because pride around heritage does the opposite of what racial discrimination does — it connects kids to something bigger about which they can feel good. We want to see how kids celebrate their own race, culture, and identity and the myriad ways they affect positive change.”
While it might not be the regular crew kids are used to, educational opportunities abound and the show exposes kids to a different form of storytelling. Season 1 is available to stream on HBO Max.
