With taped tabletop play-throughs trending worldwide, Hasbro’s subsidiary Wizards of the Coast is rolling for initiative to create the first-ever officially licensed Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) actual-play series.
First revealed by Variety, Dungeon Masters whisks fans to the mysterious realm of Ravenloft from the game’s latest expansion, launching June 16. Four players take up the quest — Dispatch star Mayanna Berrin, Forgotten Realms: Tears of Selune’s Christian Navarro, and Neil Newborn and Devora Wilde from Baldur’s Gate III — while Jasmine Bhullar from Dimension 20 and DesiQuest brings the campaign to life as Dungeon Master.Â
Fans of Critical Role and Dimension 20 are already well-acquainted with the actual-play concept, but for those joining the format fresh, this type of series follows real people as they play through an actual D&D tabletop campaign, from character creation to epic conclusion and every twist and turn in between.
However, unlike its predecessors, Dungeon Masters has the added bonus of using officially licensed D&D products, terms, and materials. Fans can even catch sneak peeks of unreleased content, which they can play online on D&D Beyond after each episode. Complete with a state-of-the-art set and an original score by Grammy-nominated composer David Arkenstone, this series will allow fans to experience their favorite role-playing game in an exciting, immersive way.
“Dungeon Masters brings a truly authentic and original experience to our fans, with all of the fun, high-tension moments, drama, and adventure built from official D&D material,” said Dan Ayoub, SVP and Head of Dungeons & Dragons at Wizards of the Coast. “Our aim with Dungeon Masters is to crystallize all that’s great about actual play — the tension, drama, and unpredictable nature — and put our stamp on it with upcoming official source material. We’re so excited to see how Dungeon Masters can inspire even more adventure from our players, and in turn, see how they inspire us to make the show better and better.”
The first Dungeon Masters campaign will commence April 22 at 6:30 p.m. PST, with new episodes dropping every week on YouTube. For more information, check out the official trailer below.
