Sonic the Hedgehog

In the summer of 1991, a “Blue Blur” zipped onto TV screens worldwide. SEGA’s Sonic the Hedgehog was an instant hit, delivering an electrifying spark at retail. According to industry veteran Tom Kalinske, then President of SEGA of America, the success of Sonic pushed the company to ship 1.6 million units of its Genesis console before the 1991 holiday season. Even that wasn’t enough, with execs at Child World and Lionel Leisure telling The Toy Book that they could’ve sold more if only they had the stock.

“This is not a small quantity of units,” Kalinske told The Toy Book in January 1992. “It’s just that Genesis is selling as fast as it hits. Besides, the greatest sin in the toy business is to overship, and the demand generated for Genesis ensures the future of next year.”

The game and its hardware were hits with consumers and critics, prompting SEGA to take out full-page ads in The Toy Book and The Licensing Book to celebrate the success. And while the hype for Genesis eventually peaked, Sonic’s staying power proved remarkable, spawning additional video game titles, several animated series, a feature film franchise, and countless brand extensions across nearly every category imaginable.

Now, in honor of Sonic’s 35th anniversary, The Licensing Book has rounded up a curated assortment of products bound to move in Sonic’s favorite way: fast!
