The secret Wordle word of the day is “games.”
The New York Times’ daily word game Wordle, which gives players six chances to guess a randomly selected five-letter word, took the world by storm. Now, Hasbro is teaming up with New York Times Games to reinvent the sensation as a new board game.
“Wordle truly brought us all together and that’s what makes it so special,” says Jonathan Knight, head of games, The New York Times. “With each daily puzzle, we’re connected with friends and family through social play. At New York Times Games, we’re focused on quality crafted puzzles that everyone can experience together, which is why we’re so excited to team up with Hasbro to bring a fresh new format to the global sensation of Wordle.”
Wordle: The Party Game delivers the same classic Wordle gameplay from the popular digital version, but with an all-new way to play. Each round, one player is designated as the Wordle Host, who writes down a secret word. 2-4 players each have six attempts to guess the five-letter-word, all while competing against one another. The number of points players score corresponds to the number of tries they need to guess the word. Whoever has the fewest points at the end of the game wins.
There are four different ways to play: classic play, timed, fast, or teams. In fast mode, players can race to solve the Wordle word before the others, while in timed mode, players have to beat the clock to avoid receiving more points. The game can be played over and over with all modes of gameplay using the included dry-erase Wordle boards and markers. The boards also use the same yellow and green tile system from the digital version, so players will know if they’re on the right track to guessing the word.
Wordle: The Party Game is available for preorder at Amazon and Hasbro Pulse for $19.99. It is expected to ship on Oct. 1.
