LEGO continues its efforts to appeal to adult fans with a new set featuring the iconic Hokusai art piece, The Great Wave off Kanagawa. The set, retailing at $99.99, is designed to be displayed after being built and is recommended for ages 18 and up.

The original early 1830’s woodblock print of The Great Wave is an incredibly influential piece of art. The LEGO set modeled after it has 1,810 pieces and includes layering elements, giving the finished product depth.

“This set offers so many ways that fans can unwind and find their flow,” says Annemette Baaskjær Nielsen, Designer at the LEGO Group. “Not just immersing themselves into the building process, but also getting into the artwork and how that is composed. Sparking an interest in Hokusai’s instantly recognizable original and its rich history of almost 200 years.”

This set is targeted at adults looking to relax and learn more about art. With its release, LEGO has created a webpage discussing the original art and its transformation into a LEGO set. Included as well is a soundtrack, “Catch the wave!”, that features experts talking about the same, designed to be listened to while the set is put together.

The continued release of adult LEGO sets follows LEGO’s Play Well 2022 Report, which indicated a majority of adults are dealing with stress and looking for new ways to relax. With additional new data from the NPD Group indicating that kidults represent a fourth of all annual toy sales, LEGO will likely continue with this release trend.
