The new Spiel mascot has a moniker!

Designed by game illustrator Michael Menzel, Spiel’s new orange tabby cat mascot is ready to hit the board game trade fair this Oct. 5-8 in Essen, Germany. Spiel recently polled its fans with web, email, and social media submissions to find the perfect name for the fair’s new mascot. After sifting through more than 400 submissions, the organization settled on five choices to put to a vote. The mascot’s official new name? Meeps!

“The community chose the name and we think it’s very fitting,” says Carol Rapp, Managing Director of Merz Verlag, a subsidiary of Spielwarenmesse that organizes Spiel. “Meeps is inspired by ‘meeple’, a familiar term to those who like to play board games, and also alludes to the noise an animal might make — plus it just sounds cute.”

The new name was the overwhelming top pick for fans that voted. Meeps the cat will now act as a brand ambassador building buzz for Spiel, leading up to the big event Oct. 5-8.
