The U.S. video game market is navigating a challenging stretch, with hardware sales and overall consumer spending taking a hit compared with last year’s blockbuster Nintendo Switch 2 launch. Still, the broader ecosystem remains active, with publishers and developers leaning into new content, collaborations, and experiences designed to keep players coming back, from Subway Surfers to a Toca Boca x Adidas experience.

The industry is also looking ahead, with Sandbox Group expanding its family-focused digital offerings and the Esports Nations Cup shifting its debut to 2027. Together, the latest developments highlight a market facing economic headwinds while continuing to find new ways to engage players across games, platforms, and entertainment.

U.S. Video Game Spending Falls 10% in July as Hardware Sales Hit Six-Year Low

U.S. consumer spending on video games, hardware, and accessories reached $4.5 billion in July, down 10% from the same period last year, according to Circana. Content spending fell 9% to $4.1 billion, driven primarily by a decline in mobile spending, with console and PC content also down. Physical software sales dropped to a July record low of $85 million, while subscription spending was the only category to post year-over-year growth, rising 6%.

Hardware spending fell 29% to $282 million, marking the lowest July total since 2020, while unit sales declined 39% across all console platforms. PlayStation 5 led hardware sales in dollar volume, while Nintendo Switch 2 led in units despite a 51% year-over-year decline. The average selling price of new hardware rose 16% to $542 amid higher component costs, with Nintendo Switch 2 also set for a price increase Sept. 1. Accessories spending fell 6% to $178 million, although cases and organizers grew 36%.

Despite the broader slowdown, several major games drove software sales. Call of Duty: Black Ops II topped the July chart following its PS4 and PS5 release, while EA Sports College Football 27 ranked No. 2 in full-game sales. Combined with the EA Sports MVP Bundle (2026), the title would have taken the top spot. Meanwhile, Pokémon Go climbed to No. 3 among mobile games during its 10th anniversary month, with consumer spending up 230% from June following anniversary events, Go Fest and other activations.

The market continues to face comparisons with the record-setting launch of Nintendo Switch 2 in June 2025, but Circana noted that broader challenges are also affecting the industry. Higher hardware prices tied to the RAM and component crisis have weighed on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series sales, while Sony plans to stop producing physical software for new games beginning in January 2028. Through July, 63% of U.S. spending on new physical software went to Nintendo platforms, while PlayStation accounted for 32%.
